Please tell us a little bit about yourself.
Hello! My name is Kaitlyn Bosnjak. I’m a Sydney based film photographer. I’m originally from Florida in the United States and I moved to Sydney in 2010 to study.
Describe your journey to where you are today.
In 2018 I decided I wanted to see how far I could get with photography as a career. I wasn’t shooting with models back then, mainly scenic shots. Photography was always something I really enjoyed so I started my @justfilm_ account on Instagram and just started posting some of my work. I was then approached by a small Melbourne label called Salia Jac and that kickstarted my career! Since then I worked on budding relationships and working with models to continually practise and refine my craft. It’s been a wonderful journey so far and I’ve met so many amazing people that are now really good friends of mine! I’m excited to see what the future holds.
You shoot using film. What is it that you love about film?
My grandpa was a photographer when he was younger and shot film adverts for the local newspaper. He taught me so much about shooting on film, and I still use the camera he bought me to this day, so I think part of why I love using film is that it reminds me of him. Another thing I love about film is the control it gives you over the image; like learning to drive manual before driving automatic. You savour the moments when shooting, and when you finally see the image it’s so exciting.
Who do you enjoy shooting the most and why?
I enjoy shooting with diverse women of all shapes and sizes because I’m honestly so inspired by their bodies, their personality, and their movements. Each person I work with allows me to tell a different story and showcase their personality in a different way.
What is the most rewarding part of what you do?
Having the chance to be creative and working with some amazing people along the way.
Have you had any key mentors/muses that have shaped your work?
My key mentor would definitely be my grandpa; he’s always giving me pointers on how to be better at what I do. Other than that I love the work of Darren Mcdonald, Alessio Albi and Alexandra Nataf. Their eye has very much inspired me and continually does.
Do you have any exciting projects on the horizon you can share with us?
I have a project coming in in a few weeks time that I’ve organised with some friends. I’m very excited about it as it’s been something I have wanted to shoot for a while now. Details are a secret until released!
What music are you listening to at the moment?
I’m actually not listening to much at the moment — I’ve been distracted by podcasts! But my husband plays a lot of music at home and lately, that’s been a mixture of The Cure, The Roots and Roy Ayers Ubiquity.
Are you a reader? Have you read anything interesting lately?
Yes! I’ve challenged myself to read 12 books this year and I am already on book 10 which I’m very proud of. I want to read more books by BIPOC authors and recently read a book by Colson Whitehead call The Nickel Boys. It’s historical fiction based on a reform school in Florida called Dozier School for Boys. It was an incredible read: very sad, but I’d highly recommend it.

Vegan Mapo Tofu, I make it pretty much every week and it’s delicious.
